2008 Church Shootings up 175% over 2007

The unfortunate fact is the number of violent acts has increased significantly in this past year. I have logged eleven shooting incidents in 2008 verses four in 2007. The one encouragement is that the average loss of life was smaller in the 2008 incidents as there were the 10 people killed in both 2007 and 2008. The reduction seems to be due to the fact that church security or church members intervened in many of these incidents in 2008 where in the past, the shooter continued until they decided to commit suicide or to leave the area.

The following graph displays the amount of incidents since 1988

The fact is that the number of church shooting has increased from 4 to 11 between 2007 and 2008 that amounts to a 175% increase in the number of events. Now please do not panic, considering the number of churches operating in the country the number is still very small. The disturbing factor about this trend in the significant jump in the number of incidents over 2007. The number of people willing to commit an act of violence in a church is obviously on the rise. The ability to say, “It will never happen here” is now gone. As I review the incidents, it becomes apparent that no specific church size is the typical target. Incident occurred in mega church and down to small churches.

In reviewing the 11 incidents in 2008 there is a good trend that is starting to be seen. Church members are not permitting the violent offender to have free reign over the events. In some cases security teams have intervened as in the recent shooting at the Scientology church in Los Angeles where guards shot a man wielding swords before he could attack any attendees. In incidents in Los Angles, Tennessee and Delaware, church members swarmed the shooter and overpowered them.  This has dramatically reduces the loss of life per incident from 2.5 deaths per incident in 2007 to 0.9 deaths per incident in 2008. The reduction in loss of life per incident can be attributed to the willingness of church members  or in the church security ministry to get involved in the incident.

The following graph list the number of people killed in church shooting annually.

Summary

The bad news is that in 2008 we have a huge increase in violent incidents at church services and functions. The reasons range from marital disputes to angry former members to family disputes. Most of these had indicators that could be used to predict the potential for violence. See the article on Intelligence for Church Security Teams here.

The good news is that the loss of life per incident has been reduced due to the quick actions of church members, attendees and security teams. Please join me in prayer for a better year in 2009.

Church’s audio-visual man arrested for Kiddie Porn in Church

Can this happen in your church?

Here is a danger that often we do not think about as the security team. What can the churches computers be used for? In this case, the media manager for the church was allegedly using the church computer to swap child porn images with others.  If you have computers and internet access at your facility,  you must consider adding serious internet filters to prohibit accessing these types of sites and images. There are a number of commercial programs to block these sites. We need to consider recommending that the church management implement one of these filters to reduce the temptation that exists here. Additionally the bad publicity that is incurred will follow a church for a long time.

The Story from the Cincinnati paper is below:

FBI says he used computers to transmit child pornography

A Hamilton man was arrested Wednesday on charges of using a computer from his church to view and distribute child pornography.

Michigan liberals attack Lansing congregation in the middle of Sunday worship

The following report was just sent to me. A liberal gay group targeted a church in Michigan to attach the conservative Christians. The information known about this attack is as follows:

On Sunday morning, amidst worshiping congregants and following unifying prayers that our President-elect be granted wisdom as he prepares to lead our nation through difficult global, social and economic challenges, the Michigan left declared open war on peaceful church goers.

They did it with banners, chants, blasphemy, by storming the pulpit, by vandalizing the church facility, by potentially defiling the building with lewd, public, sex acts and by intentionally forcing physical confrontations with worshipers.

This didn’t take place in some dystopian, post modern work of fiction and it didn’t take place in San Francisco or Berkley. This was the scene at a Bible believing church in Lansing, Michigan.

On Sunday, November 9, 2008 Michigan liberals sat peacefully through announcements, worship and prayer for the sick, our nation and our President-elect before staging a coordinated, disgusting and repulsive attack on worshipers and the broader concept of the church itself at Lansing’s Mount Hope Church.

The lefties were a part of a liberal organization known as Bash Back Lansing and their collection of radical blogs, including one of the state’s most widely read “mainstream” progressive blogs (and none which will receive a link on this website) called on “queers and trannies” from across the state and the region to converge on Lansing for what they refer to as an “action.” While many of the members claim to be anarchists (they drove on roads, ate non-garden grown foods, printed materials on products created by government protected free markets, wore clothing, talk incessantly about “organization,” etc etc etc) their broader goal is stated plainly on one of their lefty blogs.

“I can tell you that we are targeting a well-known anti-queer, anti-choice radical right wing establishment.”

Mount Hope, for the record, is an evangelical, bible believing church whose members provide free 24 hour counseling, prayer lines, catastrophic care for families dealing with medical emergencies, support groups for men, women and children dealing with a wide variety of life’s troubles, crisis intervention, marriage ministries, regular, organized volunteer work in and around the city, missions in dozens of countries across the globe, a construction ministry that has built over 100 churches, schools, orphanages and other projects all over the world and an in-depth prison ministry that reaches out, touches and helps the men and women the rest of society fears the most. They also teach respect for all human life and the Biblical sanctity of marriage as an institution between one man and one woman.

This is what Michigan liberals label a “radical right wing establishment,” and over 30 of them showed up in force yesterday. Wearing secret-service style ear pieces and microphones they received the “go” from their ringleader and off they went.

Prayer had just finished when men and women stood up in pockets across the congregation, on the main floor and in the balcony. “Jesus was gay,” they shouted among other profanities and blasphemies as they rushed the stage. Some forced their way through rows of women and kids to try to hang a profane banner from the balcony while others began tossing fliers into the air. Two women made their way to the pulpit and began to kiss.

Their other props? I’ll let them tell you in their own words… from another of their liberal blogs:

“(A) video camera, a megaphone, noise makers, condoms, glitter by the bucket load, confetti, pink fabric…yeh.”

The video camera they put to good use as they attempted to provoke a violent reaction. The image of the pink-clad folks above is one of theirs, stating in a picture worth more than a thousand words the goals of the Michigan left.

The “open minded” and “tolerant” liberals ran down the aisles and across the pews, hoping against hope to catch a “right winger” on tape daring to push back (none did). And just in case their camera missed the target, they had a reporter in tow. According to a source inside the church yesterday there was a “journalist” from the Lansing City Pulse along for the ride, tipped off about the action and more interested in getting a story than in preventing the vandalism, the violence and anti-Christian hatred being spewed by the lefties. We’ll see what he files and what his editors see fit to print.

Props were readily on display too, though some of the condoms may have been put to even more nefarious use.

An hour after police and security had collected and removed who they thought were the last of the liberals, a volunteer security person discovered two more, hiding, together, in a public restroom. While their compatriots engaged in openly violent protest in front of everyone these two snuck away to potentially stage their own protest of sorts, and only by the grace of God did one of the hundreds of kids at the church not happen upon that particular restroom in those moments. Precisely how long they’d been there and precisely what they’d been up to we don’t know.

The church’s response? After things settled down, the blasphemy ended, the lewd props removed and the families safe from fear of additional men and women running into and past them the pastor took the stage and led the congregation in one more prayer… not for retribution, or divine justice or a celestial comeuppance (that’s what I’d have prayed for) but instead that the troubled individuals who’d just defiled the Lord’s house, so full of anger and hate, would know Jesus’ love in their lives and God’s peace that exceeds human understanding.

Yesterday morning defined the difference between a church of believers and Michigan liberals. It also illustrated in shocking, painful detail precisely what we’re up against.

2 killed in Tennessee church shooting; suspect charged

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) — A shotgun-wielding man opened fire at a Unitarian church during a children’s play Sunday morning, killing two adults and wounding seven others before being overpowered by congregants, officials said.
Jim Adkisson, 58, was charged with first-degree murder after Sunday’s shooting at the Knoxville church.

Jim Adkisson, 58, was charged with first-degree murder after Sunday’s shooting at the Knoxville church.

One of the victims, Linda Kraeger, 61, died at a hospital several hours after the shooting at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, Knoxville municipal spokesman Randall Kenner said.

Also killed was Greg McKendry, a 60-year-old usher and board member at the church, police said earlier in the day.

A suspect, Jim Adkisson, 58, of Powell, Tennessee, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, Kenner said Sunday evening.

Adkisson is not believed to have been a member of the Knoxville church, and investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting, Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen told reporters.

“[The motive] is one thing we’re obviously aggressively pursuing,” Owen said.

Five others were hospitalized in either critical or serious condition, police said.

Two other people hurt in the attack were treated and released, Owen said.

Church member Barbara Kemper told The Associated Press that McKendry “stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us.”
Owen told reporters he couldn’t comment on whether McKendry confronted the gunman, but he said McKendry apparently “was the first person [the gunman] encountered” in the sanctuary.

Members of the church said a man entered the building at about 10:15 a.m. and began shooting during a children’s production of the musical “Annie.” About 200 people in the church were watching the production, which was being put on by 25 children, the AP reported.

No child was shot, and a few church members subdued the man and held him until officers arrived, police said. Church members said one of the tacklers was John Bohstedt, a man who had a part in the musical, the AP reported.

“This was a day the church was looking forward to for a long time, and it turned into a nightmare,” Bohstedt told Knoxville television station WBIR.

Ken Kitts said he arrived late and saw a couple and a child running out of the church at “super-fast speed.”

“Then everybody else started pouring out of the church, lots of them in costume from this show they were putting on,” he said.

Inside, he said, was a scene of “absolute chaos,” including wounded people and the gunman, who was pinned to the floor by church members.

“He was face-down in middle of a bunch of shotgun shells rolling around on the floor,” Kitts said.

Owen said investigators are looking into whether Adkisson has a criminal history. Bail was set at $1 million late Sunday.

“We don’t know this particular individual. We may never know why,” said Steve Drevik, a church member who arrived after the shooting. “All of this will come out in the next couple of days.”

Rick Lambert, the FBI agent in charge of the bureau’s Knoxville office, said federal agents are assisting Knoxville police with witness interviews and could help analyze evidence from the crime scene. He said the bureau is examining whether the attack was a hate crime.

“Anytime there is a shooting in a church, there is the possibility it could be a hate crime,” he said.

The church, on its Web site, describes itself as a community that has worked for social change — including desegregation, women’s rights and gay rights — since the 1950s.

Police said people were recording videos of the children’s performance when the shooting happened, and investigators were reviewing the videos. Information on what, if anything, the videos show of the shooting wasn’t immediately available.

The church’s minister, Chris Buice, said he was on vacation when the shooting happened but rushed back when he heard what occurred. Sunday afternoon — after McKendry’s death but before Kraeger’s — he spoke briefly to reporters.

“Please pray for this congregation, because we are grieving the loss of a wonderful man,” Buice said as he choked back tears.

Sunday’s attack was the fourth time in 15 months that an American church became a scene of a fatal shooting.

In December 2007, a 24-year-old former missionary candidate killed two people at a suburban Denver, Colorado, missionary training center and two more at a Colorado Springs megachurch the following day. The gunman, Matthew Murray, killed himself after being shot by a security guard.

The previous August, police said, 52-year-old Eiken Saimon shot and killed three people and wounded five others at a Congregational church in Neosho, Missouri. The attack left three people dead and five wounded.

And that May, in Moscow, Idaho, 36-year-old Jason Hamilton fatally shot a police officer and a sexton at First Presbyterian Church, then killed himself before police stormed the building. Hamilton’s wife was found shot to death in the bedroom of their Moscow home after the church shootings.

Additional Followup story with some motive items

KNOXVILLE (WATE) — The man accused of Sunday’s deadly shooting at a Knoxville Unitarian Church claimed he was motivated by hatred of the liberal movement, police officials say Monday.
The FBI is helping investigate the actions of Jim D. Adkisson, 58, of Powell, as a hate crime.
Adkisson wrote of his frustration with liberals and gays over getting jobs when he couldn’t find one in a four page letter, not addressed to anyone.
In the letter, Adkisson wrote he intended to kill people in the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church until police arrived and expected police to kill him.
The letter was found in his 2004 Ford Escape in the church parking lot. Police believe Adkisson had been planning the attack for about a week and was acting alone.
Adkisson also said in his letter that he chose the Unitarian church intentionally. Police believe he targeted the church because of recent publicity it received on its liberal stance.
There’s no indication, police say, that Adkisson was targeting children in the church, although a performance of a children’s musical was going on at the time. He appears to have fired at his adult victims at random.
76 shotgun rounds, pawn shop shotgun recovered
At the scene, police say they recovered 76 rounds from a 12 gauge shotgun purchased about a month ago from a pawn shop. Police Chief Sterling Owen didn’t name the pawn shop.
Investigators are checking whether the shotgun was registered.
A .38 caliber handgun was found by police at Adkisson’s home in Powell.
The police chief says Adkisson has given a statement to investigators but he wouldn’t release any details.
Background on Adkisson and current charges
Adkisson’s past record includes two DUIs, one in California and one more recently in Clinton, Tennessee.
He was also a past member of the 101st Airborne. He tells police has no family or next of kin.
The state had informed Adkisson his food stamps would be eliminated or reduced. He had apparently last worked in Knoxville in 2006.
Adkisson was a mechanical engineer by trade whose resume indicated he had worked around the country.
Adkisson remains charged with one count of first degree murder and is being held on a $1 million bond.
He’s due in court for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, August 5.

Church Security Hero: One on One Interview by Fox News of Jeanne Assam

I watched a video of an amazing person. Jeanne Assam, the true hero of the Colorado shooting last December, was interviewed by a local reporter. In the video below, Jeanne explains what transpired that morning, and how she continually prayed during the incident, felt complete peace, and engaged the suspect while her church security team members worked to get the church members out to a place of safety.

Of course, these incidents are thankfully rare, but demonstrate how a trained church security team can respond with valor, calmness, and precision.

Jeanne Assam and her fellow church security members risked their lives while they worked to get their members out of harms way while a man shot up the church with an assault rifle.

Your church will probably never experience an incident like this, but there is a chance your church will experience a medical emergency, or a theft, or a low level disturbance. Having a plan of action, knowing who is going to do what, and knowing what you will do afterward will help your team respond well, and will decrease the amount of trauma your church members may experience.

This is a great video. Jeanne Assam explains exactly what happened, what she was thinking, and how she engaged the man and stopped the threat to her church.
