The Review of the Trolley Square Active Shooter Incident – Utah

Here is the official report on the Trolley Square Shooting report. It does clear up many of the questions on what really happened.

On February 12, 2007, Salt Lake City experienced one of the worst murder incidents in the history of the City. Eighteen year old Sulejmen Talovic fatally shot five victims andseriously wounded four others in a shooting spree at the Trolley Square Mall. Sulejmen Talovic was shot and killed by responding police officers. The nature of this crime and theapparent lack of motive or pre-existing connection between the victims and Talovic evoked fear, outrage, grief and anger throughout not only the City of Salt Lake, but throughout our entire nation.

Law enforcement officials both locally and nationally obtained a great deal of investigative evidence through extensive interviews with victims, witnesses and familymembers. Surprisingly law enforcement was able to learn relatively little about Sulejmen Talovic and his motive for committing these atrocities. The information that follows is acompilation of these investigative leads. It is presented to supply information as to the events of that day and the days leading up to it and to describe the scope of the investigation in anattempt to bring about a conclusion and closure for all involved. We ask all readers of this document to respect the privacy of all those involved, especially the victims of this horrible crime, their families and the family of Sulejmen Talovic.

Podcast
[audio:http://churchsecuritypodcasts.s3.amazonaws.com/churchsecurityshooting.mp3]

Fernando Diaz Jr., 33, was arrested for shooting 3 people at a church festival. While the media sorts out how to stop an apparently “random” shooting, churches are left with the difficult question of stopping an incident while it is happening.

Incidents like this church related shooting have increased, and churches are seeking the best methods for stopping a violent attack against for their congregation. These incidents have been stopped by “spontaneous heroes” who take Jesus’ words “No greater love hath a man than to lay down his life for his friends” to heart.

This most recent incident in Granada Hills, California demonstrates how these incidents normally conclude. Someone present at the scene decides he or she is going to be the one to step forward and stop the insanity. While most people are staring and trying to determine whether this violent incident is a dream or reality, a brave soul stands up and acts. Instead of running away like everyone else, these people run to the sound of the gunfire, risk their very lives, and take violent action against the perpetrator.

What Is An Active Shooter Situation?

In the aftermath of the Colorado Springs church shooting, where a volunteer security guard stopped an active shooter with a minimal loss of life, proves the theory that a well placed individual can stop the killings typical in recent church or school shootings. In comparing the results of the Colorado Springs incident to the Virgina Tech Collage incident, the difference by an armed individual is very apparent. Single Person Response To Active Shooter?

Law enforcement is debating the wisdom of sending a single officer into an active shooting scenario. Historically, police have waited for SWAT to arrive, but Columbine changed many of the tactics departments had been depending on for many years. The truth is many active shooters go to the very places they choose because they know there is a small likelihood there will be an armed person to stop their murderous assault. When active shooters are confronted, it usually leads to suicide, and the current rates of suicide in these cases is around 90%. If your church security personnel carry firearms, or if you are considering whether to do this, this article provides an excellent analysis of what happens during a violent active shooter incident.

The Force Sciences Institute recently published an article explaining the rationale behind using a one person response, and the tactics necessary to accomplish it effectively.
