Church Kids Choir Director Arrested for Assaulting Girls in My Hometown

sgjer-DavidZobel.jpgI had heard the news reports that morning on two girls missing from my hometown of Xenia, OH.  A short time later, I found out one of the missing girls attended my children's school and was someone I had met before while attending school class parties and field trips.  The press reports stated they were missing and their whereabouts were unknown.

Saying she was troubled would be an accurate statement.  I discussed the incident with both my  children because rumors persisted at school, and I detected some amount of fear from my daughter who knows the girl.

The next day, the news reported the girls had been recovered in Toledo, OH (about 4 hours north), and they stated they had been sexually assaulted by a man in his thirties.

The girls reported they had met the man on My Space and asked him to take them out of the state because they wanted to run away.

The 32 year old suspect, David Zobel, allegedly drove from Ann Arbor, Michigan to Xenia, Ohio and picked the girls up.  He drove them to Toledo, where he pulled into a parking garage and refused to release them until the performed a sex act on him.

When they complied, he took nude photographs of the girls and released them.

When the girls revealed their story to the Toledo Police, Xenia was contacted and in short order was able to determine the identity of the suspect.

The investigation revealed the suspect was a children's church choir director.  Evidence recovered suggest the girls story is accurate, as his camera was found to contain the nude photos of the girls.

Here is a case where a kid's choir director, someone who has countless hours of contact with children, has been charged with kidnapping and rape.

It would be interesting to determine if he has ever been accused of this type of behavior before at any church, and whether anyone had filed a charge against him.

Church’s youth choir falls ill; swine flu suspected

At least 30 children in a Plano church’s youth choir group on a bus trip to Colorado have fallen ill, perhaps stricken from the swine flu.

Many members of Grace Presbyterian Church youth choir started complaining of shortness of breath and fevers in the last few days as the group neared the end of its eight-day trip through several states. The group made a scheduled stop Wednesday in Colorado Springs, where chaperones contacted county health officials.

“We are evaluating several of the ill individuals, and they are being tested for H1N1 influenza (swine flu),” said Dr. Bernadette Albanese, the medical director of the El Paso County, Colo. Department of Health and Environment. “The illnesses would meet the qualifications of an outbreak.”

Although test results aren’t completed yet, health officials believe the virus is the swine flu.

Colorado health officials suspect one or more choir members contracted the virus in Texas before the trip began last Friday. The group of 70 children, ranging from sixth graders through 12th graders, rode on two buses through the Texas Panhandle, New Mexico and then arrived in Colorado.

Albanese said the virus likely spread quickly through both of the buses. However, the children, some of whom are suffering from sore throats, headaches and excessive coughing, haven’t been hospitalized.

Some of the children who are healthy have returned to Plano, and the rest of the trip has been canceled. More details when we have them…

Gunman kills guard at Holocaust Museum

Today security guards stopped an armed gunman who opened fire at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. One guard was fatally wounded while two other returned fire to halt the shooter before he could engage any of the visitors to the museum. Below are some of the known details’

An 88-year-old gunman with a violent and virulently anti-Semitic past opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, fatally wounding a security guard before being shot himself by other officers, authorities said.

The assailant was hospitalized in critical condition, leaving behind a sprawling investigation by federal and local law enforcement and expressions of shock from the Israeli government and a prominent Muslim organization.

Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the gunman was “engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door” with a rifle. “The second he stepped into the building he began firing.”

Law enforcement officials said James W. von Brunn, a white supremacist, was under investigation in the shooting and that his car was found near the museum and tested for explosives. The weapon was a .22-caliber rifle, they added. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to discuss the investigation just beginning.

Officials identified the dead guard as Stephen Tyrone Johns, 39, a six-year veteran of the facility who lived in Temple Hills, Md. Museum Director Sara Bloomfield said he “died heroically in the line of duty.”

Church Security Incident: Wichita Abortion Doctor Shooter Arrested

WICHITA, Kansas – In a church security related incident, Dr. George Tiller, who remained one of the nation’s few providers of late-term abortions through decades of protests and attacks, was shot and killed Sunday in a church where he was serving as an usher and his wife was in the choir.

The gunman fled, but a 51-year-old suspect was arrested some 170 miles away in suburban Kansas City three hours after the shooting, Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said.

Long a focus of national anti-abortion groups, including a summer-long protest in 1991, Tiller was serving as an usher during Sunday morning services when he was shot in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church, Stolz said. Tiller’s attorney, Dan Monnat, said Tiller’s wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time.
