Church Offering Security: Prosecutors on Thursday charged a 36-year-old Edwardsville woman with stealing about $5,000 from Trinity Lutheran Church. The suspect, Elizabeth R. Klaas, was the volunteer treasurer of the Parent Teacher League of Trinity Lutheran School, said Stephanee Smith, a spokeswoman for the Madison County state’s attorney’s office. Klaas, of the 400 block of Buena Vista Drive, was accused of embezzling the money between June 1, 2007, and June 1, 2008.

Police Active Shooter Training Article

Here is an article from the Huffington Post on Colorado

It has an interesting review of how the police response to an active shooter has changed.

GOLDEN, Colo. — The first officers on the scene had never trained for what they found at Columbine High School: No hostages. No demands. Just killing.

In the hours that followed, the nation watched in horror as the standard police procedure for dealing with shooting rampages in the U.S. proved tragically, heartbreakingly flawed on April 20, 1999.

Two officers exchanged fire with one of the teenage gunmen just outside the school door, then stopped _ as they had been trained to do _ to wait for a SWAT team. During the 45 minutes it took for the SWAT team to assemble and go in, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold shot 10 of the 13 people they killed that day.

The killers committed suicide around the time the makeshift SWAT team finally entered. But the SWAT officers took several hours more to secure the place, moving methodically from room by room. One of the wounded, teacher Dave Sanders, slowly bled to death.

“It was really frustrating,” said Marjorie Lindholm, a grief counselor and speaker at police training seminars. Lindholm was a 16-year-old student in a science classroom where two classmates used their T-shirts to try to stanch Sanders’ bleeding. “We were told ‘They’re on their way, they’re coming.’”

Ten years later, Columbine has transformed the way police in the U.S. deal with shooting rampages.

After the tragedy, police across the country developed “active-shooter” training. It calls for responding officers to rush toward gunfire and step over bodies and bleeding victims, if necessary, to stop the gunman _ the active shooter _ first.

Church Burglar Alarm Nabs Alleged Thief

An early morning burglary at Carmel Baptist Church was disrupted by a security alarm about 2:30 AM when a silent alarm was tripped. Police responded and found William Jared Harrison, who was arrested about 2:30 a.m. at Carmel Baptist Church, where a burglar alarm had sounded a short time earlier.

He was taken into custody shortly after officers arrived at the church, on Pineville-Matthews Road at Reverdy Lane. But police searched the church for several more hours, after witnesses told them they saw one or two other suspects running from the scene this morning.

That search continued until about 8 a.m., and it forced officials at Carmel Christian School, which is operated by Carmel Baptist, to start classes at 10 a.m. — an hour later than usual. The school remained on lockdown today, with doors locked to outsiders and police officers at the school. Police said they believe the suspects fled, but they conducted the lock-down as a precaution.

During the overnight search, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police helped Matthews officers go door to door at buildings in the sprawling church campus. Other officers set up a perimeter on the property and searched nearby neighborhoods on Reverdy Lane. Police also brought in their K-9 dog search units.

A number of parents were turned away this morning when they brought their children to school at the normal time. Officers stood at the entrance to the church parking lot, and told parents that classes would begin later than usual due to the unknown situation.

Matthews police say Carmel Baptist was victimized by burglars Wednesday night, with electronics, including a flat screen TV, stolen.

Harrison’s criminal record shows at least four arrests since December 2006. The charges against him include felony robbery last September.

Minister Beaten After Clashing With Muslims On His TV Show

By Jonathan Petre
Last updated at 4:39 PM on 15th March 2009

Church Security Incident: A Christian minister who has had heated arguments with Muslims on his TV Gospel show has been brutally attacked by three men who ripped off his cross and warned: ‘If you go back to the studio, we’ll break your legs.’

The Reverend Noble Samuel was driving to the studio when a car pulled over in front of him. A man got out and came over to ask him directions in Urdu.

Mr Samuel, based at Heston United Reformed Church, West London, said: ‘He put his hand into my window, which was half open, and grabbed my hair and opened the door.

He started slapping my face and punching my neck. He was trying to smash my head on the steering wheel.

Then he grabbed my cross and pulled it off and it fell on the floor. He was swearing. The other two men came from the car and took my laptop and Bible.’

The Metropolitan Police are treating it as a ‘faith hate’ assault and are hunting three Asian men.

In spite of the attack, Mr Samuel went ahead with his hour-long live Asian Gospel Show on the Venus satellite channel from studios in Wembley, North London. During the show the Muslim station owner Tahir Ali came on air to condemn the attack.

Pakistan-born Mr Samuel, 48, who was educated by Christian missionaries and moved to Britain 15 years ago, said that over the past few weeks he has received phone-in calls from people identifying themselves as Muslims who challenged his views.

‘They were having an argument with me,’ he said. ‘They were very aggressive in saying they did not agree with me. I said those are your views and these are my views.’

He said that he, his wife Louisa, 48, and his son Naveed, 19, now fear for their safety, and police have given them panic alarms. ‘I am frightened and depressed,’ he said. ‘My show is not confrontational.’

Year After Attack, Colo. Church Guard Reflects

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — After a year of accolades that followed her shooting of a gunman who killed two teenage sisters at her church, security guard Jeanne Assam remains “low key” and says she thinks of the family of gunman Matthew Murray.

“He didn’t start off to be mixed up and confused. He started off to be a good person but he went down a wrong path,” Assam said during a news conference after a church service Sunday. A former police officer, Assam said that now she is hoping to join the Colorado Springs police department.

Assam shot and wounded Murray after he opened fire at New Life Church on Dec. 9, 2007. Murray then killed himself, ending a spree that killed four people in two cities.

Assam said volunteering as an armed security guard at the church remains the highlight of her week.
