WICHITA, Kansas - Dr. George Tiller, who remained one of the nation’s few providers of late-term abortions through decades of protests and attacks, was shot and killed Sunday in a church where he was serving as an usher and his wife was in the choir.
The gunman fled, but a 51-year-old suspect was arrested some 170 miles away in suburban Kansas City three hours after the shooting, Wichita Deputy Police Chief Tom Stolz said.
Long a focus of national anti-abortion groups, including a summer-long protest in 1991, Tiller was serving as an usher during Sunday morning services when he was shot in the foyer of Reformation Lutheran Church, Stolz said. Tiller’s attorney, Dan Monnat, said Tiller’s wife, Jeanne, was in the choir at the time.

WICHITA, Kan. — DEVELOPING: Media outlets are reporting that late-term abortion doctor George Tiller has been shot and killed at his church in Wichita, Kan.
Anonymous police sources told The Wichita Eagle and other media that the 67-year-old doctor was killed Sunday morning at Reformation Lutheran Church.
Police spokesman Gordon Bassham would not confirm the victim’s identity pending notification of relatives but said a 67-year-old “high-profile individual in the community” was shot and killed.
Tiller has been among the few U.S. physicians performing late-term abortions. His clinic has repeatedly been the site of protests for about two decades and he was shot and wounded by a protester in 1993.
Additional news agencies are reporting he was shot in front of his church. No suspect information has been released.
Prosecutors on Thursday charged a 36-year-old Edwardsville woman with stealing about $5,000 from Trinity Lutheran Church. The suspect, Elizabeth R. Klaas, was the volunteer treasurer of the Parent Teacher League of Trinity Lutheran School, said Stephanee Smith, a spokeswoman for the Madison County state’s attorney’s office. Klaas, of the 400 block of Buena Vista Drive, was accused of embezzling the money between June 1, 2007, and June 1, 2008.
It is vital that you church have accountability measures in place to prevent this type of abuse. Oversight and audit must be maintained.
