Can anyone provide some helpful information regarding background checks? I understand that from a liability standpoint, it is important to run background checks on all team members. But a few questions that I have:

  • What should be the extent of the check? (state, national, etc)
  • What are the most reliable methods?
  • Are any of the online sites trustworthy? ( I am currently considering NetDetective)
  • Who provides the best info on this? (Insurance Co, local law enforcement, etc)

Cost is a pretty important factor, but of course, we want it to be reliable.

You may want to check with your churches insurance carrier to see if they have a recommendation. If they do recommend a firm then you know you are in line with what your insurance company recommends, which will make it easier to show due diligence to your insurance carrier. You can then check out the recommended firm over the net, the better business bureau, etc.

Ditto on what Calmo2000 said. You also can check your local PD or sheriff (perhaps you have an officer in your congregation you bounce things off of anyway). We have been running checks thru our sheriff's office for daycare and some childrens church workers, but we're presently looking at First Advantage/Safe Churches (more options).

We use Protect My Ministry, they can be reached at 800-319-5581. Typically we run a Social trace, National Criminal and a National Sexual Offender, for 6.50. If you are the one responsible these checks, you will need to develop some good records keeping practices, like how and where will these records be stored and who has access to them. You will also need to know what your state and federal guideline's are for length of time that these documents are to be retained.

I'm not sure where your at in the process, but here is how it works for us.

All applications are given to security, we read through any and all paperwork submittred, contact refferences and submit to PMM. Once we have completed our portion of the process, we will return the application to the apropet ministry if all is clean. Should their be anything of a seriour nature, we will take that to our manager.

Their is much to concider if your going to be involved in this process, if you truely believe what the Bible says about grace, how do you apply that to a person that has numerous things in their background check. Can you show a consistant walk since this person has repented and what is a resonable lenght of time before they can serve, what about serving in the parking lot as aposed to the childrens ministry. How will the court view your process, have you show duediligents?

If you would like to contact us at 321-952-9673, we'll give you what we have, ask for John in security.

We also use Protect My Ministry. I agree with jlucas about extending grace in certain scenarios. Obviously, if they are a sex offender, have theft charges, or anything else that would pervent them from carrying out the duties of a security guard, we cannot accept them.

I would run these checks every year. It is hard to believe what comes up on these annual evaluations…

Hope this helps…

Church Security Alliance recommends Protect My Ministry. We are actually planning to do an interview with the CEO. His name is Brad Snellings. They are very knowledgeable and have some great, easy to use set up tools for churches.

I did finally speak with Brad Snellings at Protect My Ministry. He
was very helpful – it sounds like the way to go. He pointed out that
many of the online services are only working with available databases,
but PMM does a little additional digging to get to the needed
information.

I appreciate the help on this.

Our church also decided to go with Protect My Ministry. The head of our Children's Ministries originally had some issues with them, but those have been resolved. Last night, she reported to me that five checks she asked for came back within minutes of request, to her complete satisfaction. You should be satisfied with them, too.

Whether it's Protect My Ministry or First Advantage or another worthwhile agency, I think we all agree that background checks are an important tool for church safety and security. More necessary now than ever.
