A fired church janitor is facing a burglary charge after employees of Main Street United Methodist Church found him inside an office, allegedly rummaging through a desk.

The suspect, Victor T. Branch, 45, of the 2500 block of College Avenue, is in custody with bond of $50,000.

He is not being charged with theft of any items that workers at the church, 1400 Main St., discovered missing last weekend.

An Alton Police Department report says a church employee discovered $300 missing from an office storage room at noon Sunday.

The next day, an employee noticed that a black, Latitude brand E6500 laptop computer worth $1,120 and a silver-colored Nikon digital camera were missing from one office. Some $25 to $28 in currency was gone from a cash box in another office.

The report says there was no sign of forced entry to the church, leading the workers to suspect either a visitor or employee stole the items.

Because of the recent thefts, at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday, an employee asked police to check the building before workers went inside, to ensure their safety. A secretary found a drawer to her desk had been rummaged through, and $1 and keys were missing; another desk drawer was found forced open, and $200 and checks for an upcoming golf tournament had been stolen.

At that time, an employee allegedly saw Branch rummaging through a desk drawer in another office, saying he was looking for a key, the report says. The employee, though, told police that Branch – who church workers suspected of the thefts – had been terminated Monday and was not allowed on church property.

The report says the burglar apparently broke a window in a door to gain entrance to the church on Tuesday.

It is sad that these types of crimes happen in churches, but being part of the human race it is inevitable that some of societies problems will find their way to the church. We cannot completely stop such incidents but we can harden the target.

Reminding people to lock things of value up or keep a good watch on their valuables can help, but after awhile the warnings are often less and less heeded.

We are all familiar with the saying, "a picture is worth a thousand words". If we do a security assessment now and again, taking a digital camera with us we can take photos of security problems, as well as photos of valuables left unattended. We can show these photos to the pastor, administrator, etc. and see if perhaps this can be brought to the attention of the church body and maybe save a situation of theft at our church.

Also the church directory often has family photos, as well as the address and phone numbers of the families. It is nice to be able to put faces with names, especially if your church is of a size that it is hard to know everybody that attends. That directory in the hands of a thief or a molestor is very valuable to them as well, so making sure directories are not left in an area where anyone off the street can grab it is worth a thought.

It is sad churches have to deal with these kind of incidents. I am the security director for a church of around 2,000 and we were recently having a rash of petty thefts in various areas of the building. One specific area though, our kitchen, experienced several thefts, which prompted me to setup a hidden camera investigation. We had a suspect, but had no evidence to use in questioning. Interesting enough, in this case, he admitted to his crime before we were able to gather the evidence.

I think this brings up a bigger point in my mind when dealing with church security. As the security director, my team and I are responsible to maintain a secure area for staff and visitors. Unfortunetly, in a 130,000 sq ft building, a 5 to 40 person team (depending on the time/event) is not enough to monitor every area of the building.

Security in a church is EVERYONE'S job. From visitors to staff, everyone needs to be security minded. We gather information from various people all the time.

However, the staff needs to take the proper measures to protect the property of the church in which they are responsible for. I have never had a theft case where the item was secured where it was suppose to be. If the money is in the vault, it doesn't get stolen. If the cameras are in their secured rooms, they don't get stolen. If you leave money in your desk, your purse laying out, or expensive electronics sitting around – they will get stolen.

We don't live in Maybury where you could leave your front door open. These times are tough and people resort to anything to try to support themselves or their family.

I agree that it is everybody's job, the problem is getting people who feel "safe" in church to go along with security efforts. It only takes one weak link to make a chain break and for the whole process to fail.
