I'm starting a safety/security team in my church. I can not get any help on use of force, detaining, or licencing questions answered by anyone from the state. I've emailed the Attorney General, State Police and Homeland Security with out any response. I tried to talk to local police and all they sent me to in neighborhood watch! What should I do? Call a lawyer and find out the legality of the team? Help! I'm starting to pull out hair I don't have! This is just as bad as trying to get the team started in the church!

I would recommend talking to a lawyer. The AG, etc… will not usually give you "official" legal advise. Your lawyer will also be the one defending you in court.

You should also discuss it with your insurance company. It is important to let them know what you're doing with safety planning. If you don't tell your insurance company and something ends up happening, your insurance doesn't like surprises. Talk to them about it. They'll know what you can and can't do also. You can also contact the church law group, if you do not already have an attorney, at http://www.churchlawgroup.com. Any other questions, feel free to ask.

You might want to contact the following group. They are responsible for the licencing of security companies in the state of Michigan. They might be able to provide some guidance to you.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.

Our regular business hours are from 7:00 A.M. to 5:30 P.M., Monday ~ Friday. The Commission offices are located in downtown Lansing in the Hollister Building, 6th floor, at:

106 W. Allegan Street, Suite 600
