Authorities Say Jealousy Motive For Church Shooting

Police Announce Arrest In Connection With Volunteer's January Killing

A Kintnersville woman has been charged in connection with a
fatal church shooting that took place two months ago in Bucks County. Authorities charged Mary Jane Fonder with first-degree murder, saying she killed
Rhonda Smith, 42. Smith was found Jan. 23 inside Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church, located on Route 212 in Springfield Township. Fonder is being held without bail.

Sources said investigators also plan to revisit her father's disappearance case from 15 years ago. According
to sources, Fonder was questioned and cleared after her father, Edward
F. Fonder III, mysteriously disappeared in 1993.

On Tuesday, officers at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in
Perkasie announced the arrest that cracked the 2-month-old church
shooting case.

Police concluded that Smith was shot inside the church office, where she volunteered as a secretary.

Fonder
is accused of bringing a gun to the church where Smith was working Jan.
23 and shooting her twice in the head, police said. Fonder belonged to the church, sang in the choir with Smith and attended functions with her, as well, police said.Last
Saturday, a gun was found at Lake Nockamixon with an ammunition box.
Police said the weapon was registered to Fonder. She had allegedly told
police she got rid of the gun in the '90s. Wheylan Sylsberry and his 8-year-old were out fishing when they discovered the gun on the shore. “Actually, my son found it,” Sylsberry said. “It looked suspicious — it didn't look right sitting there. “Police said the gun is the exact gun that killed Smith.

According
to police, Fonder had strong feelings for the church's pastor and was
jealous of Smith's attention from him. Fonder also spoke to Smith
before the shooting and had just found out that she was receiving
financial support from the church. She was also jealous of Smith's relationship with others at the church, including choir friends, police said. Church members said they could not believe Fonder was capable of the shooting.

“We all liked her,” said Paul Rose of the Church Council. “From what we all know, she was a wonderful person.”Fonder
was arraigned Tuesday night in Jamison.

A defense attorney argued that
she has never been arrested or charged with a crime before and is not a
flight risk, having owned her property for 21 years. But prosecutors
said they consider Fonder a danger to the community and successfully
argued to have her held without bail. Her next court appearance was set for April 11.

This brings up the point that we must not only guard against church violence during our worship services, but also at any other times staff members are present.

This is true. many times we fail to realize the relationship that can develop in the mind of a member of the church. In this case the woman apparently developed a romantic attraction to the Pastor and decided to kill her rival.

A similar situation also happened in Wisconsin when a member of the church who was in the service started to shoot members. He had stormed out of a previous service as he was outraged about something the Pastor has said.

A church shooter, as we have seen from recent events, is not always an unknown nut case coming to the church to do violence. We must always be on our guard.

I had not really thought about this. How can smaller churches protect themselves during the week. We are looking into starting a group that will be at church during the service. We will all be volunteers and can not staff during all the hours that the pastors are there all week. How can we handle an angry member? Especially one who we never thought would do something like this?

People that work at church, be it as a volunteer, or a paid position, should be made aware, and reminded on occasion, that they have a responsibility for each others well being while at the church. There should be a way, depending on each churches physical makeup, where if a person is in distress he/she has a way to notify another person in the church. This may be a button on their phone that flashes a light in another's office, or puts their phone on speaker mode in another persons office, etc. These persons may not be part of the safety/security team but they need to be trained in techniques that may help them avoid a situation that can lead to a tragic ending. Training in verbal judo techniques is a good start, the way they converse with others can have an effect that can defuse a situation. Along with verbal judo how a person appears, such as; in control, firm but fair, helpful but not a doormat, can determine how a situation may play out when dealing with a person that is nearly out of control. As team members we need to check with these people on occasion to make sure there are not problems brewing that we are not aware of. Often people will not devulge information that they think we might find not worth our consideration, we need to make sure they know if it concerns them then it concerns us as well.
