Seminar Description

Churches represent a unique crime prevention challenge for both law enforcement officials and church leaders. Because of their nature and mission, churches are open and trusting environments. Once victimized, a standard response is, "Who would steal from God?" Regrettably, the answer is that there are many people who would.

The unfortunate reality is that churches are not immune from criminal occurrence and victimization. Churches are frequent targets of property crime, crimes against persons, financial fraud, vandalism, arson and hate crimes. The American Crime Prevention Institute's Church Crime Prevention Seminar will provide practical and economical strategies to reduce church vulnerability to crime.

The focus of this seminar is the identification of risks and threats that exist in church environments and how to prevent those vulnerabilities from occurring, utilizing cost effective strategies. The importance and significance of understanding why churches are often the targets of criminal occurrences will be highlighted.

Who Should Attend

The Church Crime Prevention Seminar is designed for law enforcement officers, crime prevention specialists, and senior church administrators, ministers and leaders.

Crime prevention officers and specialists are encouraged to invite church leaders from their communities, as well as their personnel congregations, to attend this important seminar. The information provided in the seminar will be valuable to both law enforcement officers and church leaders.

Seminar Details

Participants will explore the internal and external security risks associated with houses of worship. Each unique risk factor represents a distinct vulnerability that must be mitigated while maintaining the mission of the church.

The seminar will demonstrate how to protect the physical assets of the church by the use of a proactive church security survey and the development of cost effective security awareness policies and procedures. Elements of instruction will include the use and application of closed-circuit television, intrusion detection systems and electronic access control systems.

The seminar will also focus upon the protection of the church's financial assets. The risk factors of cash management, robbery prevention, theft, fraud, and embezzlement will be discussed and strategies to avoid victimization offered.

An additional focus of the seminar will be the protection of the church's most valuable asset; its children and youth. This timely topic will highlight proven strategies for protecting those most vulnerable from an array of potential areas of risk.

The final part of the seminar shifts from potential criminal threats to the development of proactive strategies that churches can implement to protect themselves from criminal occurrences. These strategies involve the development of a three prong initiative; Development of a Church Protection Committee, a Church Safety Team, and a Church Watch Program.
