What reactions have any of you dealt with with the wearing of radio earpieces, or anything of that nature? And how did you deal with them?

Since we started as a safety team, dealing initially with medical issues, people got used to seeing the staff wearing earpieces. We do keep it very low key and most people no longer even realise that we are in place.
If someone asks about, we say it is so we can contact the various ministry desks and the medics, That seems to be very well accepted. I have also had conversations we I stated that we had a lot of area to cover and the ear pieces keep the noise away from the church family so we do not bother them.

Before when we were wearing radios, we received a lot of people making fun and thinking that people in my crew was trying to be big bad "security" guys. Certain people in the congregation do not take our task seriously and poke fun and treat the guys like we are a joke. I am constantly trying to fight this reaction and therefore try to be as low key as possible. I sort of understand this thinking in a small church, but we are not a small church at all, but the people who have this negative reaction are the ones who have been with our church since it was like 50 people, and now that we are in the 800-900 range, they don't respect (or understand) what we are trying to do. I guess they just are to familiar with the guys I want to do the job, if I used new people nobody knew, they would probably respect them more??

Head_Deacon we received the same reaction, but when serious situations arose they started praising and requesting our presence. So remain faithful to the calling, people joke about the police..it comes with the territory. I started a bike patrol in our church area in response to a high amount of car thefts in the area, in the beginning they clowned me, but when they realized the benefit of being able to leave church safely or not walking up to a broken car window like many of ours members have experienced before the bike patrol started, members started smiling when they saw us patroling as they entered the building. I even received praise from a police seargant in our church's district for taking proactive measures because the police were being bombarded with calls regarding car thefts and break-ins. Keep up the good work brother. It is necessary! You have to earn respect…it just takes a little time. The congregaton respects us now more than ever and cooperate with our requests..because they understand we have their best interest in mind. Especially after witnessing us having to remove a disruptive person from the building. Then they saw the were prone to violence in service. Continue to use the people everyone knows, it works to your benefit. You want to know the congregation, and anyone is capable of doing something at anytime. We don't go overboard, but everyone is a suspect to our team. The major incidents usually occur from people we think won't do something. Just like the man that walked in the church and shot the pastor while he was preaching. Those that knew him said "We didnt think he would do something like that" Right now they joke because they don't see the need like you do. But like Nehemiah stay on the wall and keep those that started with you. People just have a thing against authority even in the house of God. Don't change a thing!
