Hi Jerad,
Welcome to the site, we hope to be able to help you. You know, pre-planning and analyzing your security threats is a great place to start, and for most churches having a plan is the difference between a level headed response and a disaster.
When a violent incident happens, churches get scared and scramble to put something together out of fear, liability concerns, etc.
We as Christians should never operate in fear because it is then we make wrong decisions. God is the ultimate protector, and we can attempt to minimize things when we are confronted by life.
Start with the planning portion, and don't rush into decisions about weapons, force or anything else! These are huge considerations and should never be taken lightly.
The last thing you want is the misapplication of force, the ramifications are just too huge for everyone involved.
Carrying a weapon may result in a case where you "create a condition" where it might be used.
It is my humble opinion that if a weapon is to be carried, it should not be by the whole team, and the training level for the few individuals, who have permission to do so, should be of the highest caliber, should be trained on consistently, and should meet all state laws, certifications, and qualifications.
If you have police officers that attend your church, they would be the best place to start.
Many of the church shooting incidents have been solved by spontatneous heroes attempting to save lives and jumping on the criminal.
The best church security is the one where nobody knows you have security. Where they are the most helpful, friendly, and able to recognize human behavior.
Let us know how we can help or if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Glen Evan
