Hello,

My name is Jerad Hoeffel and I am a new member to CSA. I have been the head deacon at my church, Family Christian Center, in Defiance, Ohio for about 11 years now. I have all the ushers, money counters, and parking lot attendants under me, which consists of about 25 guys. Our church runs 2 Sunday services and a Saturday night service totaling about 900 people. My pastor has entrusted the security of the service to the ushers and we have set things up accordingly, but times are changing, and we need to get more serious. I'm now trying to put together a strictly "security" team. I'm hoping this site will help guide me and feed me information to asist me in doing so. Right now I am in the gathering info stages. I'm having trouble finding the proper "mind set" people, and the ones I do have are not faithfull enouph for me to use. I myself have little training, but have the security of the church in my heart, given to me by God. I believe this is my calling! I'm an avid weight lifter and stay in top physical condition. I am familiar with guns and have been shooting regular at a range for the past year. I try to learn as much as I can from magazines and the internet on sercurity matters, but still I have had no formal training. A close friend of mine is a city police officer, who I use as an advisor. I have seen and handeled many different situations in the past and try to forsee any situations that can arise. Our current building layout is a nightmare waiting to happen and we have large holes in protecting the people and the children if there arose a threat. We are the largest church in the 6 county area and my pastor is very outspoken member of the community, I believe it is only a matter of time before a real situation could occurr, I believe God has been prepairing me for this and has lead me to this site. I'm looking forward to using this site and learning how I can better do my part to help people find and follow Jesus!

Hi Jerad,

Welcome to the site, we hope to be able to help you. You know, pre-planning and analyzing your security threats is a great place to start, and for most churches having a plan is the difference between a level headed response and a disaster.

When a violent incident happens, churches get scared and scramble to put something together out of fear, liability concerns, etc.

We as Christians should never operate in fear because it is then we make wrong decisions. God is the ultimate protector, and we can attempt to minimize things when we are confronted by life.

Start with the planning portion, and don't rush into decisions about weapons, force or anything else! These are huge considerations and should never be taken lightly.

The last thing you want is the misapplication of force, the ramifications are just too huge for everyone involved.

Carrying a weapon may result in a case where you "create a condition" where it might be used.

It is my humble opinion that if a weapon is to be carried, it should not be by the whole team, and the training level for the few individuals, who have permission to do so, should be of the highest caliber, should be trained on consistently, and should meet all state laws, certifications, and qualifications.

If you have police officers that attend your church, they would be the best place to start.

Many of the church shooting incidents have been solved by spontatneous heroes attempting to save lives and jumping on the criminal.

The best church security is the one where nobody knows you have security. Where they are the most helpful, friendly, and able to recognize human behavior.

Let us know how we can help or if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Glen Evan
