We posted a recently published article from California where a number of churches are advocating CCW by members of the church. You can view the article here.

What are your thoughts on the issue?

I understand that because of the times; action needs to be taken, especially at churches and other places where people peacefully gather. I think having armed individuals is justified. However having armed individuals based solely on the fact that they can shoot a paper target and because of that proficiency they are granted a CCW permit does not take into consideration what is needed past static shooting skills. At the very least they should have extensive training under stressful scenarios in the use and retention of a weapon.

Wherever they go there will be an armed person there, because they are carrying a weapon. Many police officers are killed with their own weapons and most have received at least some weapon retention training.

Where are they going to get this kind of training? Will the church budget support it?

LE training is usually bare minimum because of budget. The officers and civillians who will pay for advanced training out of their own pocket is a very small minority. Not everyone will pay $1000+ a year to take courses from a known instructor or shooting school. Many would balk at the $100 a CCW refresher night cost.

On the subject of weapon retention, concealed is concealed. This will be the norm for church security. No Level III security holsters needed to prevent a gun grab If no one knows the weapon is there.

At a recent Church Security conference I attended, the Sheriff teaching the class said that “We would all like to have a trained team, but if Average Joe with the 8-hour CCW is all that is there, then that's what you have to roll with.

Average CCW holders acquit themselves quite often in defensive situations with little or no training other than shooting paper tragets. Why is it that when the word 'church' is mentioned, there seems to be thoughts of casualties from stray rounds?

I'm not against training. I take several advanced courses myself yearly out of what I put away as a training budget (I've posted reviews of a few here). I know LE who won't train unless required and who don't even carry off-duty. If they (who should know better) won't, the average citizen/church security member surely won't.

I was not referring to any specific and expensive training when I gave my opinion that I feel it is important that persons in these situations have more training than just shooting at targets. It would be nice if everyone could have extensive training from experts and money was no object. We agree in that area, that for most that is not an attainable goal.

It is possible to train under simulated conditions of stress, reacting and shooting with an elevated heart rate is valuable and an easy scenario to achieve. In a shooting in a confined area such as a sanctuary with people running, yelling and so on, any training done under like conditions with the heart racing will be a plus.

Concealed is indeed concealed, but nothing is perfect. A few weapon retention techniques learned well and practiced often is worthwhile.

I’m not sure how to answer “why is it that when church is mentioned there seems to be thoughts of casualties from stray rounds.” I did not write that in my opinion on the subject and I do not find that in the story about the California churches? Whether it is a shooting at a church, a home, a school or wherever, by LE or a CCW holder, it is my opinion that training gives the good guys a better chance at success.

CCW holders have indeed acquitted themselves well in shootings and there are LE who will not train past what is required as stated, no argument on that. CCW holders or cops that take training seriously are, in my opinion, a better person to have at your side when it hits the proverbial fan.

Sorry, didn't mean to pick on you with this. It's an attitude I've run across on other forums. People don't seem to care whether CCW is allowed until one mentions church, then they get all up-in-arms about it.
