Does anybody have any background in martial arts? I'll tell a little bit about myself here. I am a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a 1st degree black belt in American Style Karate. I was involved in a school that made up 2/3 of the American Karate team represented in the Irish Cup tournament (a tournament in the top 5 biggest tournaments in the world.) Anybody else have any background in martial arts?

Traditional martial arts: Yoshukai Karate Green Belt

Other:

Initial Rifle, Pistol and hand-to-hand: USAF

IDPA/IPSC Pistol and 3-Gun Competition

(Former) NRA Personal Protection Instructor

Extreme Close-Range Gunfighting: Gabe Suarez

AMOK!: Tom Sotis

(I consider anything involving any kind of fighting to be a martial art)

Martial: characteristic of or befitting a warrior

I would have to say I agree. I love it!

I have 23 years of experience and I am still active in training as I am a trainer. Although our staff has about 60 years of unarmed combatives training, we feel that most of what we learned throughout the years is not applicable in a life or death situation.

We have "fine tuned" what is realistic and not realistic in a life threatening situation. I think this is the key to training whether it is unarmed combatives or firearms training. Most "martial arts" are not suitable for self-defense purposes. Knowing what is and is not will mean the difference between life and death!

Train like you fight and fight like you train!

I mentioned AMOK! in my previous post. I'd like to add a group called Dog Brothers Martial Arts.

As the post above says, not all MA techniques may be useful. Marc Denny from DMBA and Tom Sotis from AMOK! have developed some 'default' techniques that will work right now. Not after years of training and belt promotions. Michael Janich is also a name I'll throw out to you.

I think it will really be worth your time to check out some of their information. I'm not sure about Marc, but Tom travels the country teaching. I took a two-day course (Knife Defense and Accessing Your Weapon While Under Attack) from him in August 2008 for $199 and it was money well spent. There are various clips from these men on youtube.
