Use this forum to discuss your training needs, schools or session that you have attended. Additionally, you can list you training needs that have not been addressed and we will try to help find a solution.

I am preparing to hold a class for our team at my church on basic self defense and weapon disarms. I've had 11 years in martial arts experience, and I am a 2nd degree black belt, licensed instructor in Tae Kwon Do. I have been blessed to have been a part of that in my life to use it now for the purpose of the protection of the people of Christ. One thing we're researching, as far as legal issues, is the use of weapons. Not necessarily firearms, weapons such as the expandable baton and things of that nature. If you guys have any idea where I can find some legal resources on that subject, it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. My computer has been in for service. The best place to start is with the local PD. They can tell you what sections of the state codes would apply to your group in your state They can also provide an initial indication of what they believe you can be legal with.
However, I need to caution you that many officers do not really understand the laws that pertain to private security. You will need to research the laws, have a lawyer in the church check into them or check with the state attorney generals office.
In some states OC and ASP are legal but in others they are not.
If you can not go as far as CCW, then OC and ASP batons do a pretty good job until the climate changes. Make sure that the staff is properly trained to the state required standards that apply to your group.

Has anybody else had problems with their team members not wearing their equipment properly? Example…People not wearing their radios when they're supposed to and not working their scheduled "shifts" when they're supposed to and things of that nature? If so, how did you deal with it?

Yes Karatejake,
I don't have a real security team yet, but just with the ushers, parking lot attendants, and door men, we are having a real problem with faithfulness! The devil seems to be attacking us hard right now, we have had 3 guys quit this month! I'm really in need of some energy infusion into our ministry. All this while I'm trying to start a security team. I have , well had, 25 guys in all, but I would say only about 10 of them really have the vigor of God in them while doing their assigned task. Most don't understand why we are doing what we do, the importance, or just flat out are lazy. I find myself and two top helpers doing about everything and they are getting burned out. I am at the church Saturday nights, and two services on Sunday. I need guys praying for God to help me lead these men, because I blame me. It starts with the leader, I feel like I am not helping them fulfill the call God has given them, or at the very least be a good steward in this "helps" ministry of the church. Sorry for rambling, but this is something I have been struggling with for several years now. Shoot, I can only get about half of the ushers to seat people and wear their name badges. I try to lead by example and do all the grunt jobs right there with the men, but it only seem to make people use me as a crutch and let me do everything! Thanks for letting me vent!

haha. anytime.
Jared, I'll tell ya….no matter where you are, what you're doing, and how much vigor and energy you may have…..you'll always lose speed with other people. It's good that you like to jump in there and work along with everyone else, but, you're right, it allows them to use you as a crutch. If you don't mind me asking, what size is your church? What's your average Sunday A.M. attendance? Let me know if there's anything I can do to help

The one thing I can say is don't let yourself think it's your fault. You can't force people to be interested in it. We just had a discussion with one of our team members about the things I asked about earlier. He said that it was becoming "hum-drum" and just kinda monotonous. To that, I can agree. Doing the same things every single service can easily turn boring real quick. Since you don't have a security team just yet, I can assume that you simply have ushers that watch the halls? Things of that nature? I'm going to say the best thing to do for them is to call a meeting and remind everyone of the importance of what they do. Remind them that this is their opportunity to serve their Lord and their church and when serving the Lord, you ought to put forth your best. When you do that, I would hope they would take that and change how they do what they do. Now, as far as the security setting, one thing I would suggest, and one thing our team just started doing, is to run training scenarios by random once in awhile. Just set something up before the service and after the service act it out. Don't tell any team members. This serves a two-fold benefit. One, it keeps the team on their toes and it keeps their job fresh and exciting. Two, it lets your congregation know that the security team isn't just sittin around doin nothing. Let me know what you think.

Jared, don't feel you're in this alone. Take it from someone who's "been there done that" for years, too, at work and at church. At work, part of my job is to be safety officer for a sand & gravel operation. That includes training and equiping workers, and then trying to keep them from being hurt or killed. It can be a constant battle.
Working with volunteers at church can be much the same. Over the years, I've seen programs start out with everyone "gung ho" and then fall back to kind of routine as before, if not fall apart completely. As an elder and trustee, I've often felt it was a leadership issue – and at times my fault for not being a better leader. I've had to take this, and my own shortcomings, to the Lord on a real regular basis.
Remember that in any group, church included, 20 percent does 80 percent of the work, and the rest like to ride. And grunt work holds no glory. It's human nature.
I know it seems tough when you have a calling and desire, and it seems like you can't pass it along. If you have a small core group who shares the desire to be sheepdogs to the flock, you've done well. Be encouraged that the Lord will honor your efforts as you work to fulfill your calling.
Any time you need to vent, there's some good folks here.

I don't know much about the company, but there's one in Orlando.

Look into that one maybe and see if that might be what you're looking for. Let me know.
Obviously, there's the one from Church Security Alliance in a couple weeks, but you may have past the chance to register.

A friend involved in Church Security in Birmingham, AL attended a seminar. He basically liked it:
"They had a pretty good power point presentation. Although, we already
know most of their recommendations and already have similar policies
& procedures. They did make some good points about certain
ministries having a higher probability of problems than others; such as
divorce recovery, addictions recovery, etc."
I've corresponded with the director. As soon as I get my final budget approved, I'm thinking about ordering both their DVD set and the one offered here.

Sheepdog
I have been talking to Glen. He is certified to teach most of this. We are
looking to put together a one day program for hands on training for churches
that have decided to implement a team and need aditional training. This would be a 6 to 8 hours Saturday
and include:
How to place your security assets
Use of force continuum – Use of force policy
Physical holds and joint locks
ASP training and ASP Certification
OC Spray Training
Using physical restraints
Dealing with difficult people
Tell tail signs of an impending attack from a confronted person
Overview of procedures for
1. Bomb threats
2. Chemical threats
3. Tornados and fire threats
Question and Answer Session
We might be able to add the Taser for a church that is considering their use. Since you are very close to where Glen and I are at, I would like to talk to
you about doing a trial event. Please send me an email at jack@churchsecuritymember.com
