[Video Church Security Training]: Church Security and Using Firearms As Force

Church security and use of force with a firearm. Using a firearm in the church setting is usually the only way to stop someone intent on killing people in your church with a gun. You can shoot from a distance, from behind cover, and if you’ve done you part and trained, you can hit the violent person and save lives. Choosing to carry a firearm is a big decision, but if you do it, train for it like your life depends on it…because it does. Watch the third part of Use of Force for Church Security below…

how does a church security team train and qualify with a firearm as well as batons and oc spray. Im a retired deputy sheriff and i know how we qualified and trained but how do i get other lay people to get this same training and qualification. Also we are in NYS and i believe that it is also up to the church wether or not we carry in the church and my pastor has indicated that he would like at least me to carry. Its been a year and a half since i qualified witha weapon so i need updated as well where woul i do that especially if i dont want the local law enforcement talking about our church and telling people that we are carring weapons

Does your state have concealed carry permits? If so, there should be places to quaity and hopefully the church would pay the fee.

I would like to know if there is any additional raining for Pastorial protection in the church your thoughts Glen. To respond to that question about firearms carry for the other lay people. If the church considered licensed by the state to have a liability security company and security people are employed by the church and Okayed by the pastor than they can obtain a restricted carry permit to carry only to and from the church. There would also have to be a Gun custidian with insurance to be responsible for the weapons that are carried by security. That is a process. Police Plaza has the applications for Gun custodianship and for permits for security to carry guns.

Lack of adequate training opportunities continues to be a common problem. I live in Northern Indiana and formal training courses are almost nonexistant. Two of us from our church security team have taken basic courses at a local firearms store (Midwest Gun). The courses were good but not geared for church security. We desperately need additional training/qualification programs for church firearms use, baton training, oc spray and handcuffing. Any suggestions?

I enjoyed the video. Good advise. I am the Dircetor of our Church Security Department. I am a former Police Detective LT and have been acting as our church Security Director for the last 10 years. I obtained my state Armed security officers license and my concealed carry License. Our church employees 8 additional armed Uniformed Security Officers. We do not advertise these positions they are all hired internally from among staff we feel are qualified and committed to our churches vision. We started carrying after the incident in Colorado but had been reveiwing it ever since Columbine as we have a christian school as well. For liability reasons the Church owns the weapons, they are maintained on campus when the officer is off duty and we have individal bonds as well s an umbrella policy. Our officers quailify twice per year and have a corporate membership at a local indoor range where we currently shoot 100 rounds per month. We also hire off duty uniformed deputies and hire them based on the following guideline. 500-1000 people we hire two, 100-3000 we hire 4, 3000 and up we hire 6-8. We have two uniformed deputies who sit at the edges of our sanctuary and two plain clothes security within 21′ of Pastor. Te congregation got used to the deputies after about 3 months and they dont even act as if they are there now. we usually run about 1000-1500 per service. Hiring off duty officers seems expensive but it a good start to increase the level of security in your congregations even if they just patrol the parking lot and your ushers have contact with them.
